About me

Hi, I'm Lucy Whittington – a strategic marketer helping business owners turn strong products and services into successful, scalable businesses.

Over the past 30 years, I've worked across startups, scaleups and established businesses in sectors including SaaS, tech, professional services, education and founder-led consultancies. My work spans everything from early-stage go to market plans, to investment readiness, from big market moves or smaller scale repositioning. I've got all the T-shirts! But it's always about simple, clear, marketing plans.

I've advised business owners and leadership teams refining high-value service offers, and worked with founders building SaaS and tech platforms in B2B and a few other things besides. From new launches, to inside out pivots (software developed inside a business, now to be sold commercially), or pushing past a sales plateau in an established service business, MOPS works everywhere.

The challenge is usually the same – great product, smart founder(s), messaging that's not landing, unsure positioning, or a sales process that isn't converting or keeping customers.

I'm really good at spotting gaps, and sharing ideas of how to fill them. And I always bring strategic focus, commercial clarity and energy to the table.

Oh, and just so you know – I tend to be "nicely blunt".

About Maria

Introducing my partner in project management – the Details Director Maria Watson.

There's nothing that escapes the eagle eye of Maria, she's a huge fan of systems, logical next steps and process. She brings the accountability and manageability of projects to life, setting tasks and suggesting actions so that they get done with you being overwhelmed.

Maria has been helping me run Inspired Business Marketing for over a decade and when I say she's my right hand woman I probably mean she is also my left hand, too! Not only does she keep me on track but she manages all the MOPS action plans for people we're working with. This is why you don't get overwhelmed with MOPS because you're doing the right actions in the right order and making progress.

Maria's background spans accountancy (she's AAT qualified) has an online business manager diploma and is a Certified Director of Operations. She loves finding new simple software to run things behind the scenes, is never far away from a spreadsheet or a Trello board, and is always spotting things I don't think about.

We've worked together on lots of client projects even when I've been doing an Interim or Fractional Head of Marketing role. Maria is part of MOPS support because I know without a doubt that she will help you get things done.

Frequently asked questions

FAQs

Is MOPS marketing consulting or coaching?

For one off MOPS reviews it’s mostly consulting. For ongoing support, it’s a mix of consulting and project management with a side of mentoring and accountability.

Do you ‘do’ marketing or delivery?

No. I guide, review, prioritise and sense-check. And Maria project manages. There may be some notes and editing suggestions in your feedback but MOPS is not day to day actions. Marketing delivery can be done by your team, an agency, or using AI, but they will have clear briefs, and can be directed and reviewed by me and the team.

Will MOPS work if we’re early-stage?

Yes, and I work with lots of startups. BUT you need to have some budget for marketing, and understand the value it brings. If you want faster learning, clearer Go To Market focus, and to avoid costly mistakes early on, MOPS works really well. You can’t always bootstrap everything, although we can work with the budget you have.

What if we already work with an agency?

Not a problem. MOPS helps you get more value from them. You may want to refine or review the work they are doing for you, and you can also get me/my team to meet with them and ‘manage’ the work so you don’t have to.

How is this different from hiring a Head of Marketing or full time CMO?

You get senior thinking without the cost, commitment, or hiring risk of a full time Head of Marketing or CMO. And it will be independent advice (no office politics to worry about!). You can either hire me for a one off review, ad hoc projects or ongoing marketing support.

Is this Fractional Marketing? Or an Interim Head of Marketing?

Yes and no. It’s fractional because we’re not full time in your business, and we do work well instead of a full time head of Marketing so that’s essentially the same as an Interim Head. But we’re not employed by you, we work in the MOPS framework, and we’re available for advice and support within our range of offers (not day rates). You also get accountability and project management if you opt for MOPS support which you may not get with just ‘Marketing’ alone.

How quickly will I see results?

This is an ‘it depends’ answer based on the marketing actions recommended as some will take longer than others to create results, but confidence improves immediately. Most clients feel clearer and more confident about their marketing as soon as they read their MOPS Review.
