Studio 8 is an independent men’s and women’s fashion retailer in Primrose Hill, London.
Their first website was a simple brochure site "just like a business card," says MD Simon Savage. In October 2009 "I decided – right we have got to make something happen here."
Simon started researching, setting himself strict criteria:
"I discovered there were a lot of people out there offering internet retailing. I'd go to sites I liked to find out how they powered their e-commerce."
First, he approached Venda (now Powa), who came up with a price well outside Simon’s budget. Then, when he found ecommerce solutions he could afford, he couldn’t find anyone who could deliver the minimalist look he was after.
"I grilled around 15—20 people, and everyone I spoke to, I learned something new. Then I went back to Venda, who in the meantime had implemented a low-cost ecommerce platform called Powa."
"Powa have templates that you can design yourself," says Simon. "But I didn't want to feel I was just knocking up any old thing. I wanted something that looked professional.
"What I really liked about Lucy and Andy was that they had a variety of 'package' offers on the Powa platform, from basic design to fully bespoke design. It's really clear what you get and the price is good as well."
"Lucy and Andy explained carefully what was realistic and what was impractical," says Simon. "Most important, they understood my aesthetic need for a clean, minimal site."
The new ecommerce site went live in March 2010. It has already paid for itself, and covered the costs of the camera and studio rig that allows Studio 8 to take high quality photographs of clothes as they arrive.
Inspired Business Marketing also custom designed Studio 8 a WordPress blog to run alongside their Powa ecommerce site.
"The blog allowed us to show our human side. We can share a little more about ourselves and our knowledge of fashion. I can see that the more we put in the more we will get out of it."
"Before we went live with the Powa site, we had about 4,000 hits on our website in three years. Our Google Analytics show that we have had more than this number in just three months, with around 40,000 pages looked on the ecommerce site and over 1,000 hits on my blog.
"There's been an increased volume of email enquiries, and every question I answer has the potential to turn into a sale. The ecommerce site meets all our criteria – ease of use, plenty of information, and good search engine recognition."
There are busy times when new season's stock comes in. But Powa's easy-to-use interface means that each item takes less than five minutes to describe, catalogue and enrich with search keywords

"I've learned that a website isn't just something you upload, leave and forget. It is about consolidating, you have to embrace it and nurture it just like a real bricks-and-mortar store."
